Trainee Engineer/Fifth Engineer


Being as a Trainee Engineer/Fifth Engineer onboard you have to do the following work
1.       Transfer the Bilge well to Bilge Tank
2.       Drain the Air Bottle
3.       Dry Washing of Turbocharger
4.       Soot Blow of Economizer, Will remind physically today inshaAllah(4june12)
5.       Soot Blow of Boilers
6.       Take on load /off load generator
7.       Transfer the FO drain Tank to FO settling Tank
8.       Coupling arrangement for Cargo Operation, will remind it physically today inshaAllah(4june12)
9.       Startup of incinerator
10.   Startup of boiler
11.   Startup of Main Engine
12.   Startup of Pumps

Overhauling the two units of generator


Allah the most merciful, the beneficent
Following is the procedure for overhauling the two units of generator
1.       Arrange the tools as required from experience, visit the application (generator) and read instruction from the service manual.
2.       Planned the full work.
3.       Start with name of Allah who is governing this world, this generator and you
4.       Drain the particular unit or all the units as required
5.       Shut the fuel, Lubricating oil and pneumatic line valve (starting line) as required
6.        Open up all the required connection Jacket water outlet, exhaust manifold, scavenging manifold expansion bellow ( or nut bolt if it is present)
7.       Open the nut of stud by the help of hydraulic pressure device.
8.       Lift the unit and keep it in safe place.
9.       Remove the carbon deposits. Clean it with the help of wire brush pneumatic motor, emery paper (Sand paper).
10.   Now place the new furnished units on cylinder block.
11.   Tightened the stud
12.   Place the rocker arm assembly and take the tappet clearance ( by rotating the fly wheel to the firing order of that particular unit at top position)
13.   Yup the overhauling is now complete. Open the requisite valve and enjoy the electricity from your new overhauled generator.
14.   Take a trial and fix the abnormal condition as necessary.

Tools Required
1.       24(For rotating fly wheel), 17(For fuel injector), 27(For fuel rod of fuel injector) socket
2.       Extension
3.       Copa slip (Copper compound)
4.       19, 17 and 27 MM spanner (with fixed and open end at the other end)
5.       Electro clean slow for general cleaning
6.       Blade for cleaning
7.       Pneumatic wire brush for cleaning
8.       Fuel injector extractor device
9.       Portable hydraulic hand pump, hub, pipes, hydraulic jack
10.   Replace the gasket b/w head and cylinder block normally four cooling water, one scavenge, rocker arm oil and main cylinder gaskets, exhaust gas pipe gaskets, steam joints for cooling water o/l to main pipe.
11.   Torches
12.   Fan incase of severe heating
13.   Clothes for cleaning
14.    

The Pressure Gauge Working


The Pressure Gauge


The pressure gauge is a sensitive and delicate device which tells us the pressure. Usually use on pressure line, pump discharge. They are remotely display at appropriate place by using small brass line know as capillary.
Inside is a bourdon tube, linkage, gears and needle. This whole assembly is fitted in a closed glycerin glass (at front and MS sheet at back). The purpose of glycerin is to lubricate the whole assembly also it absorbs small jerks.
There is a filling cap at top of pressure gauge. It may have a hole or not. If you keep the hole closed in a leaking bourdon tube it may damage the glass and also become pressurized. So it is a safety not to close the top plug if it is leaking.
Yesterday night (23-10-2012)there was an alarm of Exhaust Valve Drive Pressure low in this case the pressure gauge switch the second stand by pump incase 1st one malfunction.
The alarm rises due to pressure drop by pressure leaking bourdon tube. It is rectify by closing the main cock then blanking the pressure gauge line so that actual flow (2.8 to 3.4 Bar) remain in the line.

Pakistan Engineering Students Approach

Engineering is a very vast subject. Covering enormous topics in it tummy. Normal approach which is common in many students is to learning the aspects of engineering it will help them to get the job hunt. They are practically failing. Behind this there is a reason. Like someone is smoking the cigarette. There will some people who can easily imitate the smoking person style. But there are people in the market which will not able to smoke because there concentration is not as much deep as possible for smoking, they start smoking like a fashion, Fashion does not mean that you master the subject. One can demonstrate it through lecture and practical. But a person will not able to smoke until he will not effort to smoke itself.

The other example is of swimming. A person can’t able to swim until he will demonstrate theoretically and practically. May be he is trying to copy or follow the other but he is not full aware. What is to imitate from others.   

Same things are happening with us. Universities are teaching their student theoretically but not practically as strong as they must be to fit in the future job/industries. 

Same things are happening in their Final Year Project. This project must be more practical then their normal practice. But what the things are happening that they want to rid of the FYP rather then to take the full concentration.

Some will not able to develop FYP. Because they are not practically strong as they must be to develop new innovative ideas/design.

Crankcase Inspection of Compressor
Risk Assessment:
Turn off the source and lock the button (additionally a warning TAG can be placed over the source that work is in progress.
Visit the machinery physically and ascertain any hazard during working.
Write on daily White board that work is in progress on Compressor No. 1 etc
Tools:
During visit to machinery remind in mind what proper tools which you will need during crankcase inspection.
We use the following tools during opening up of Crankcase.
·         17 milimeter Open and Close end spanner.
·         22 milimeter Open and Close end spanner.
·         A ball peen hammer
·         A flat screwdriver
·         Red RTV silicone
·         Adjustable spanner
·         Torque spanner with appropriate socket (we use 22mm)
·         Cloths for cleaning and empty bucket for pouring the dirty crankcase oil.
Commencement of Work:
Open up the Crankcase door by 17mm spanner. Remove the nut; door such that no harm to gasket. Check that there is no particle of metal in the sump. Check the Crank pin bearing nuts( by using 22mm spanner). If they are loosen tight it with the help of torque spanner at appropriate torque. Drain the Crankcase oil by removing the square nut. Clean the Crankcase and then pour some clean oil to drain it again. Tightened the square nut and replenish crankcase with new oil (Castrol SN 100). Our marking of compressor is 4cm (Min Level). Assemble the crankcase door and nut as in reverse process.  Start the Compressor  for trail run Check the ampere, Temperature, pressure of 1st , 2nd, water , oil gauge and any unusual sound if any. If the doubt persist stop the compressor immediately and check the compressor again.
